Portrait of Lies

From my poetry notebook…This Ain’t Shakespeare.

portrait of lies

Your eyes see a picture of perfection

But buried beneath the beautiful package

Is something outside the truth

Secrets, lies and deception

All tumble over one another

In a wildly beating heart

A heart panicked

At the thought of discovery

And the inevitable destination

Of a loss of a life

Carefully crafted

A smile tricked out at the corners

Speaks of a lover kept secret

Eyes gazing into a memory of

Citrusy rooms and paisley bedspreads

Where two bodies writhe in desperate abandon

Chasing away lost hopes and daily drudgery

Looking to find a past youth

And forgotten excitement

But ends up with guilt weighing heavily

As true love smiles tenderly

From a portrait of perfection

Why

From my book, I Heard You

why

Digital art by SakimiChan

She drinks her beer from a wine glass.

When asked, “why?”

She says, “why not?”

She wears her rattiest hoodie beneath her best leather jacket.

When asked, “why?”

She says, “why not?”

She pulls on muck-covered work boots over designer jeans.

When asked, “why?”

She says, “why not?”

She smokes her weed from an ivory pipe.

When asked, “why?”

She says, “why not?”

When asked does she ever wish her life was different.

She looks confused and says, “why?”

Why indeed.

Candle of Beauty

From my poetry notebook…This Ain’t Shakespeare.

candle of beauty

Outer beauty is the flame

Mesmerizing, bright, glowing

Hypnotically drawing us in.

But it flickers and wavers

Disappearing like a whisper.

Inner beauty is the candle

That gives the flame life.

Providing it with strength

To deliver light and warmth

To those within its sphere.

To eventually melt

Into a glistening pool.

Only to be reshaped and molded.

Back to its original form,

To pass on the flame.

I May Not Be a Woman After All….

pile of magazines

Reading a woman’s rag mag was quite an eye-opener for me. Being a woman, I thought I had the whole “woman” thing figured out. Come to find out, I know squat about being a woman. I discovered I was so far out of the loop that I almost wasn’t even a woman.

Here’s a list of the finer points of being a woman that educated me.

  1. That women on the backside of forty…well, pushing the fifty mark…are sexy! Who knew? I guess a lot more men than I thought are excited by a woman that has had some life experiences and isn’t afraid to show her true self. In fact, it seems to take the pressure off of them to not be so concerned about how they look.

2. That Alpha women are highly sought after. An independent woman who can take care of herself, pay her own bills, is assertive, aggressive and opinionated isn’t such a bad thing after all.

3. That a woman’s body is her temple…she just needs to know how to accessorize it properly.

4. Make-up is now done in a way that it needs to look like we’re not wearing make-up…despite the layers we’ve troweled on to make it look that way.

5. Exercise is still one of the healthiest ways to stay young. Just stay away from gyms where young people go.

But if forty/fifty plus is considered sexy, well dammit what the hell is sixty gonna be? I’m gonna rock my independence by wearing what I feel like and doing exactly what makes me happy!
